Located within the Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans, 3243 Chippewa explores a new multi-unit housing prototype situated near Tchoupitoulas Street—an industrial seam between the active port and wharf infrastructures of the riverfront and the layered fabric of the surrounding neighborhoods. Tectonically, the project investigates mass timber as a regional material system, connecting locally grown, sourced, and manufactured building components in a continuous process from forest to building. As the project develops, it will continue to examine the relationship between housing, industry, craft, and the evolving material future of the Gulf South. Follow along as the project emerges through ongoing research, design development, and material exploration.
